About Henry Dean
“If you want to stand out, you want Henry on your side.” – Henry Dean, circa any project he’s on.
This guy has no problem being himself. A self proclaimed oddball with a knack for comically off-kilter work. Henry is an instinctual director, with youth-culture and emotion at the core of every film. Through his filmmaking he strives to turn the real world up to 11, creating visually striking work that’s emotionally honest.
Henry grew up in London, teaching himself to make music, videos and take photos. Growing up alongside the internet, he busied himself deep diving into the niche weirdness of mid-2000s internet videos, an influence that can be felt in his often playfully grotesque, weirdly beautiful visuals. He has his Year 9 English teacher to thank for opening his mind to film studies through the medium of the great Spike Jonze (and we’re talking pre-feature film Spike Jonze. Legit.) Henry went on to study film at American University of Paris and University of Nevada Las Vegas, giving him a taste for both art house cinema and the Hollywood machine respectively. Since graduating he has worked consistently as a director, occupying his very own weird and wonderful niche of the internet, thanks to his relentless appetite for making films.
Outside-the-box, or in Henry’s case, outside-the-aspect ratio, is the neatest way to describe his films. Existing in the space between grit and gorgeous, his films push the boundaries of visual storytelling managing to be visually kaleidoscopic and electric while maintaining a performance focus. Henry strives for comedy with heart. Finding gold in situations where you don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
And when he’s not bending the rules of filmmaking to his will, Henry can be found playing basketball, reading and generally being himself.
